The Government should increase public awareness of online safety by introducing the following proactive tools to help tackle disinformation:

Members can read every reason.
Hold a public inquiry into organised political disinformation & hate speech
Launch a public inquiry which investigates the sources, funding & networks behind any organised political disinformation campaigns, examines how hate speech may be weaponised for political gain, and recommends reforms to hold politicians and organisations accountable for undermining democracy.
Conduct a review of political news regulation by Ofcom
Conduct a review of policy at Ofcom. We think that political news reporting on all channels has become unrepresentative of the public vote at the last general election and that political reporting using the ‘due weight’ policy is allowing extreme growth in far right coverage.
Establish review of risks to UK democracy from foreign influence on social media
We ask the Government to commission an independent review into the influence of foreign individuals and entities with significant control over major online platforms used in the UK. The review should assess potential risks to national security, democratic integrity, and the spread of misinformation.
Require online platforms to remove misinformation targeting bereaved families
Introduce Jay’s Law: specific legislation obliging platforms to remove organised misinformation that targets grieving families after tragic deaths; require platforms to act on speculative, malicious content likely to cause serious harm; and work with Ofcom on enforcement and sanctions.
Ban social media for under-16s to protect children
Ban social media access for under-16s. We think this could protect their mental health and childhood. Evidence shows it can cause harm, exposing children to bullying, addiction and inappropriate content. Follow Australia’s lead to prioritise their well-being. Social media can wait—childhood cannot.
