Welcome to State — UKUnited Kingdom
Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know about using State to understand your political power, join others, and route concerns to the representatives who can act on them.
What is State?
State is a platform for UK constituents to make their concerns visible to the people in power. You tell us what's on your mind, local or national, big or small, and we route it to the elected representatives who can do something about it.
Where others have raised the same thing, we group your contribution with theirs so the signal gets louder. Where you're the first, you start something new that others can join.
What's the Oracle?
The Oracle is your guide in navigating your political universe and arming you with the best tools to achieve the change you want. It's mapped the political structure of the United Kingdom so that you have all the right information and connections you need.
You can ask it a question, or tell it something you care about. It takes anything, a complaint, a question, a proposal, or an opinion, and figures out what to do with it.
What's a motion?
A motion is something a group of constituents wants to see happen, addressed to whoever can make it happen. It might be national, like reducing VAT on energy bills, or local, like fixing potholes on a specific road.
You can react to motions with Strongly Agree, Agree, Disagree, or Strongly Disagree, and your reaction joins the aggregate that the responsible representative sees in their dashboard.
What's a reason?
When you react to a motion, you can add a reason explaining why you agree or disagree. Reasons appear alongside the motion as for or against voices, so other constituents and the responsible representative can see the substance behind the numbers.
Reasons must be relevant to the motion they're attached to. If you want to make a different point, create a new motion or find an existing one that fits.
What's a statement?
A statement is the individual contribution you make through the Oracle. It might be the first input on a topic, leading to a new motion, or it might join an existing motion as a reason for or against.
Who can see what I post?
The text of any motion or reason you publish is visible to other State users and to the relevant elected representatives. Your real name, email address, and full postcode are never shown to anyone, including MPs.
Representatives see that you're a verified constituent of theirs, not who you are. If you put personal information in the body of a motion or reason, that's visible, so think before you write.
Why does State need my postcode?
To verify you live in a UK parliamentary constituency and to route your contributions to the correct elected representatives. We store the constituency, not your full postcode, after verification. We don't use your postcode for anything else.
Is State politically neutral?
Yes. We don't endorse parties, candidates, or positions. Our job is to make all constituent concerns visible to the people who represent them, not to push an agenda.
You'll see issues from across the political spectrum on the platform, and we treat them all the same way.
What does "Your Political Power" show me?
It's a summary of where you sit in the political system: your parliamentary constituency, your local ward, and the elected representatives at each level, including your MP, councillors, and mayor where applicable.
It's there so you know exactly who you can hold to account, and it appears at the top of the home page for quick reference.
How does "Recent Chats" work?
Every conversation you have with the Oracle is saved so you can come back to it. You can scroll your recent chats in the left sidebar.
If you don't want a chat saved, you can delete it from the chat itself. If you'd rather not save anything at all, you can turn off chat history in Settings, though this means you lose the ability to come back to past conversations.
Can I see what others in my area are concerned about?
Yes. Use Themes in the left sidebar to browse by topic, or Map to see issues geographically. You can filter by constituency, theme, or how recently the issue is gaining momentum.
If a motion has lots of constituents behind it, that shows up clearly so you can support it with one click.
What happens when I create a motion?
When you click Create Motion in the sidebar, or the Oracle suggests it via the Take Action route, your motion is created with you as the first contributor.
It's automatically tagged to a theme and a scope, your constituency or national depending on what it's about, and routed to the relevant representative's dashboard.
Other constituents can find it through Themes, Map, or the Oracle. They can react with Agree or Disagree, strengthening the signal sent to the representative. The representative can publicly respond in their dashboard, and that response shows up against the motion for everyone to see.
If a very similar motion already exists, the Oracle will show you that one first and offer to add your reason to it instead, so the signal is not split across duplicates.
How do I react to a motion?
Open any motion and use the four-point scale: Strongly Agree, Agree, Disagree, Strongly Disagree. You can also add a reason explaining why, which appears alongside the motion as a for or against voice.
Each constituent gets one reaction per motion, but you can change it any time.
Can I delete a motion or reason after I've posted it?
Yes. Open the motion or reason, tap the three-dot menu, and select Delete. The text is removed. Aggregated reaction counts the contribution fed into may persist, but anonymously and not attributed to you.
How do I report someone else's contribution?
Open the motion or reason, tap the three-dot menu, and select Report. We review reports within a few working days and remove anything that breaches our community guidelines, including abuse, hate, spam, impersonation, or anything illegal.
Can I use State on behalf of someone else?
No. Each account is tied to a verified individual constituent. If you run a campaign or organisation and want to coordinate constituents on State, share motion links with your supporters and let them sign in and react themselves so each voice is verified and counted properly.
Do I need an account to read State?
You can read motion pages and theme pages without an account. To submit a reason, react to a motion, create a new motion, or use the Oracle, you need to sign in.
This keeps the platform real: no bots, no astroturf, no foreign interference.
How is my data protected?
In short: we store the minimum we need, we don't sell anything, and we use industry-standard security, including encryption at rest and in transit, access controls, and regular audits.
The full detail is in our Privacy Policy. If you have specific questions, email hello@state.com.
How do I delete my account?
Go to Profile, then Settings, then Delete Account. We delete your account data within 30 days. Motions and reasons you've published are deleted with the account; aggregate reaction counts may persist anonymously.
How do I get in touch?
In the app, go to Profile and choose Give Feedback. You can also email hello@state.com.
We aim to reply within two working days.
