We call on the Government to work with property owners, county councils, town councils and building companies/charities to conduct a review of abandoned buildings. The review should consider whether these buildings can be refurbished into shelters for the homeless, and for children under 18.

Launch a review into improving social housing provision for families
Launch a review into reforming social housing so families with young children aren’t trapped in unsafe, overcrowded flats. The review should look into creating fairer allocation rules, offering suitable downsizing options for older tenants, and ensuring families have access to a safe, healthy home.
Fund converting vacant Public & Commercial Buildings into Affordable Housing
We want the Government to identify vacant public and commercial buildings and fund their conversion into affordable housing which prioritises homeless people, young people leaving care and low-income families, so empty buildings help communities instead of standing unused.
Require landlords to sell vacant properties to house homeless and refugees
With over 700,000 empty homes, 170,000 vacant commercial properties, and around 350,000 homeless people, taxpayers shouldn’t bear the housing burden. Empty properties could be sold to investors committed to easing homelessness for a minimum of two years post-purchase.
Require councils to review social housing tenancies
People are being left without support, while some social housing tenants remain in subsidised homes despite earning high incomes or no longer meeting the need criteria.
Support for bringing empty homes back into use
The council is offering guidance, support, and grants to help owners of long-term vacant properties return them to residential use. An online drop-in session is being held.
