The current process allows Government to force top-down council reorganisations without a final, binding say from local residents. We believe that local consultations are often flawed. We demand the law be changed to give residents the democratic right to a referendum.

Require a referendum for the establishment of any combined mayoral authority
We demand the introduction of a statutory requirement for the government to hold a legally binding referendum before the establishment of any combined mayoral authority in England.
Hold a referendum in Wales on abolishing the Senedd and Welsh Government
To hold a referendum in Wales on whether to abolish the Senedd and Welsh Government and return the government of Wales to Westminster.
Require government to secure consent by referendum to delay a local election
We think the present government is acting in an undemocratic way by continuing to delay some local elections. Any government wanting to delay any local elections should first have to put the question to a countrywide referendum and get public consent from the result.
Require a referendum and 2 years' notice for any major constitutional changes
No government should be able to make major changes to constitutional structures without a referendum from the British people, including changes to elections or alterations to the powers or composition of Parliament. Proposed changes should have at least 2 years' notice to enable research & debate.
Introduce law to allow voters to recall local government councillors
At present only MPs can be recalled by their electors in specific circumstances. There is no mechanism for voters to remove local councillors. We think there needs to be legislation covering all elected local government representatives and have unacceptable non-attendance as a reason for a recall.
