We think Parliament needs to change the Recall of MPs Act 2015 so that voters can start a recall petition at any time initiating a by-election, without needing certain circumstances to be met.

Extend the Recall of MPs Act to cover MPs who change or leave political party
We call on the Government to amend the Recall of MPs Act 2015 so that a recall petition is triggered when a Member of Parliament who stood for a political party leaves, is expelled from, or switches the political party from which they were elected.
Introduce law to allow voters to recall local government councillors
At present only MPs can be recalled by their electors in specific circumstances. There is no mechanism for voters to remove local councillors. We think there needs to be legislation covering all elected local government representatives and have unacceptable non-attendance as a reason for a recall.
Automatically suspend and recall MPs charged with violent or sexual crimes
MPs who are charged with a violent or sexual offence and are excluded from the Parliamentary estate should be automatically suspended from the House. The Recall of MPs Act should be amended so that this would trigger a recall petition ensuring local representation.
Prevent people convicted of serious crimes standing or serving as MPs
Ban anyone who has ever been convicted of serious offences (such as sex offences against children, terrorism, serious fraud, corruption, violent crimes) including foreign convictions and given a custodial or suspended sentence from standing for or serving as an MP; when appeals have been exhausted.
Hold MPs accountable for misleading statements and apply sanctions
Introduce a statutory mechanism to investigate and sanction MPs who make demonstrably false or misleading statements in Parliament or public communications. This should include an independent body empowered to review evidence, issue corrections, and apply proportionate penalties.
