New legislation to improve performance of companies in the public interest
Pass a bill to make water, energy and transport companies invest a set amount in infrastructure before paying out shareholders. Introduce a new performance index that they must surpass before profits can be taken out of the companies, or consumer prices can be raised.
Hold MPs accountable for misleading statements and apply sanctions
Introduce a statutory mechanism to investigate and sanction MPs who make demonstrably false or misleading statements in Parliament or public communications. This should include an independent body empowered to review evidence, issue corrections, and apply proportionate penalties.
Review the tax affairs of all sitting MPs for public peace of mind
Government or Parliament should initiate a review of the finances of all sitting MPs for all years they have sat in office. The review should make sure they were conducting themselves according to the law regarding taxation, including with regards to their assets.
Check that MPs’ declarations of financial interests are full and accurate
Check for financial discrepancies in every MP’s submissions to the Register of Financial Interests. This should happen as the self-declaration of interests that is currently being used seems to fail on far too many occasions.
