Require anyone standing for MP to have prior business experience
We, the undersigned, call upon the UK Government to introduce legislation requiring all Members of Parliament (MPs) to have demonstrable experience in business prior to standing for election.
All newly elected MPs must complete a six month probationary period
All newly elected MPs should complete a six month probation. Unlike many other jobs, they can get a full term with what we feel is limited accountability. An independent panel should review performance, and MPs deemed unsuitable should face removal. We think this would help ensure MPs honour pledges
Prevent people convicted of serious crimes standing or serving as MPs
Ban anyone who has ever been convicted of serious offences (such as sex offences against children, terrorism, serious fraud, corruption, violent crimes) including foreign convictions and given a custodial or suspended sentence from standing for or serving as an MP; when appeals have been exhausted.
Ban MPs from having second jobs except in NHS
MPs should not have other jobs outside of Parliament unless they are qualified doctors, nurses or other healthcare professionals and actively work in the NHS
Require parliamentary candidates publish five years of tax returns
The Government must update election laws, governing who may stand as a UK parliamentary candidate. The new requirement is as follows; to have their name included on the ballot paper, parliamentary candidates must publish their tax returns from the previous five years, or be disqualified.
