In Syed's own words

I have proudly served as a Valence Councillor since 2014, working closely with residents to make our community safer, cleaner, and more welcoming for everyone. Over the years, I have taken on a number of leadership roles within the council, including serving twice as Chair of Assembly.

I currently serve as the Cabinet Member for Enforcement, Community Safety and Parking, where I lead on tackling anti-social behaviour, improving enforcement, and ensuring our neighbourhoods remain safe and well-managed. Previously, as Cabinet Member for Public Realm, I led the drive for a cleaner and greener borough.

I have been a committed member of the Labour Party for over 24 years, consistently standing up for fairness, community safety, and opportunity for all.

I hold an MA in Marketing and an LLB (Hons) degree, bringing both strategic insight and a strong understanding of governance and public service to my role.

Alongside my council responsibilities, I represent Barking and Dagenham on several key regional bodies, including the Thames Regional Flood and Coastal Committee and environmental partnerships. I am also an active member of London TEC and contribute to important strategic discussions affecting our borough and beyond.

I am proud to support education and community development locally. I serve as a Governor at Grafton Primary School, an Advisor for Barking & Dagenham Adult College, and a Trustee of Barking & Dagenham Council for Voluntary Service (BDCVS), helping to strengthen opportunities for residents of all ages.

I regularly attend local forums, including Tenants and Residents Association (TRA) meetings and Safer Neighbourhood Team meetings, ensuring residents’ voices are heard and acted upon.

I remain committed to working with my ward colleagues and the community to continue improving Valence—making it a place where everyone feels safe, supported, and proud to live.
