Martin Hey

Green Party past councillor for Northowram and Shelf

Council: Calderdale

Served until: 26 June 2026

Green Party

Calderdale's first ever Green Party councillor, Martin Hey is now standing in the Halifax constituency at the 4th July general election. A truly local candidate, Martin was born in Ovenden and has since lived at Pellon, Norton Tower, Hipperholme and now Northowram. Martin joined the Green Party when it became clear that existing efforts to fight climate change weren't meeting the scale of the challenge. He's now a prominent member of the Calderdale Climate Action Partnership and leads the Green Party on Calderdale Council. As well as fighting climate change, Martin believes that reducing inequality and changing housing policy to deliver more social housing are key priorities locally and nationally. If elected, he'll also campaign for bringing all utility businesses back into the public sector. Martin says " At this election, there's little to choose between Labour and the Conservatives, with both offering little more than rising inequality and continued environmental destruction. In contrast, in the Green Party we offer real hope for real change, with sustainable policies that will progressively reduce poverty and homelessness and increase everyone's quality of life".
