Struan Mackie

Liberal Democrats councillor for Thurso and Northwest Caithness

Active on State

Council: Highland

Term ends: 6 May 2027

Liberal Democrats

I was elected to The Highland Council in 2017 and have the privilege of representing the Thurso and Northwest Caithness ward. In my nine years as an elected representative, I have strived to ensure that the voices of local residents, businesses, and communities are heard and reflected in the decisions that shape our future. I currently serve on the Council's Corporate Resources Committee, the Communities and Place Committee, and the Caithness Area Committee. I am also honoured to hold the roles of Vice-Chair of the Caithness Area Committee, Provost of Thurso, and Senior Civic Leader for the County of Caithness. Living, working and owning a business in the Far North has shaped my view that the Far North is too often overlooked and neglected at all levels of government. My key areas of interest include economic development, nuclear and energy policy, transport, and improving connectivity for rural and remote communities. I am passionate about securing investment and opportunities for Caithness, supporting sustainable economic growth, and ensuring that our nuclear community has a seat at the table when discussion nuclear policy across the UK. As both a councillor and civic leader, I work closely with residents, community organisations, businesses, and public-sector partners to promote the interests of Thurso and Caithness. I am committed to supporting initiatives that strengthen our communities, improve local services, and create opportunities for future generations to live, work, and thrive in the far north.
