I want the Government to require all trainee teachers to complete a 3-month placement in Special Educational Needs schools so they can understand neurodiverse children, learn strategies to support them, and ensure every child can thrive in mainstream education.

Mandate all teachers in mainstream schools receive SEN & mental health training
Fund mandatory SEN and mental health training for all teachers. We are concerned that many children with special educational needs are being failed, as mainstream staff often lack the skills and qualifications to support pupils with social, emotional and mental health needs.
Allow unpaid trainee teachers on placement to access 30 hours of free childcare
Many trainee teachers work 40+ hours per week on placement; cannot access 30 hours of free childcare per week. Trainee teachers who work on full-time placements can be excluded from vital support, forcing families to struggle and careers to stall.
Fund more training for teachers to support children with SEN
There should be more funding for more training and awareness around children with special educational needs. We believe there is a lack of understanding around special needs, and therefore a lack of understanding on how to support these children.
Expand statutory SEN allowance entitlement to Teaching Assistants in SEN schools
Many SEN teaching assistants (TAs) handle complex behavioural, medical, and communication needs. We feel current pay doesn’t reflect the intensity or value of the work. Low pay contributes to recruitment & retention challenges. We believe TAs should receive SEN allowances.
Specialist school places significantly behind delivery targets
Council has delivered approximately 974 specialist school places against a target of 1,312 for September 2026, falling about 300 places short. Major projects including a new free school and school rebuilding have been delayed, failing to meet election campaign promises on special educational needs provision.
